President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Umar Kremlev is set to be returned to office unopposed after the Court for Arbitration (CAS) for sport yesterday ruled against stopping today’s election in Istanbul, Turkey.
According to the Associated Press, Dutch boxing federation president, Boris van der Vorst, had moved to the CAS to stop the election after he was declared ineligible on Thursday.
Van der Vorst was set to contest the presidency against Kremlev but an independent panel ruled Thursday that he was ineligible, the Associated Press reported.
The independent vetting panel investigated complaints which included collaboration with officials that were standing for other positions in the organization which were “prohibited.”
Kremlev is widely expected to be returned to office for another four-years.
Kremlev has been able to seek reelection despite the sanctions meted out to Russian athletes and teams as a result of the country’s war against Ukraine.
At his election speech in 2020, Kremlev promised to rebuild the organization which was facing several challenges including suspension from the International Olympic Committee.
He had also announced plans to fund annually each of the 155 national federations with US $2 million and to strengthen the governance structure of the organization.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle is attending the annual general meeting along with other boxing association presidents from the Caribbean.
