Detectives in Region Six have since arrested two prime suspects in connection with the murder of ex-convict, Akash Pechia, who was found with severe chop injuries about his body in an empty lot at Number 55 Village, Corentyne on Tuesday morning.
According to information received from a police source, based on footage of the attack, detectives were able to place the two suspects in custody who were hiding out in the Molsen Creek backlands on Tuesday evening.
However, as of yesterday afternoon, investigators were continuing the search for a third suspect. The source noted that while the two in custody have not fully confessed to the crime they have admitted to their involvement in the attack and identified the third person as the mastermind.
Based on information received, the third suspect and the deceased had a heated argument prior to the attack.
Pechia’s cousin and a friend who were initially detained for questioning as they were the last persons seen together with the now dead man also remained in police custody as of yesterday afternoon.
Pechia, 22, of Number 50 Village, Corentyne, was found with chop injuries to his neck, back, and wrist on Tuesday around 7 am in an empty lot at Number 55 Village, Corentyne.
According to information gathered from residents in Number 50 Village, Corentyne, Pechia and several relatives and friends were last seen imbibing around 3.30 pm on Monday at the Number 50 bus shed as they would normally do.
In August, 2021, Pechia made news after he escaped from the Number 51 Police Station while in custody on a simple larceny and theft charge. He had reportedly broken into a store and stolen several items at Number 47 Village, Corentyne.
He was later arrested in Springlands, Corentyne and charged.
His cousin, Diane Pechia, on Tuesday related that after the man was released from prison about three weeks ago, she encouraged him to stay out of trouble.
“He always a get lock up for thiefing and he always a go jail and come out back and three days ago he come by me and me deh tell he na walk late and stay home.”
She recalled, that the now deceased informed her during his visit to her residence at Number 47 Village, Corentyne, that an ex-convict from Skeldon whom he spent time in jail with was looking for him.
“He tell me how this boy and he went prison and the boy looking for he and threatening that he go kill him and that the boy even beat up one a he friend and a ask for he”, she related.
