Comprehensive bowling spells from Heema Singh and Joaan Van Sertima propelled Demerara to a nine-wicket win over Essequibo as the Guyana Cricket Board senior female inter-county tournament continued yesterday at National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Essequibo won the toss and elected to bat first but were bundled out for 62 in 29.1 overs. Demerara, in reply, raced to 63 for one in just 7.1 overs to secure their second victory of the 50-over competition.
Singh rocked the top order early on after removing Navika Narine, Analisa D’Aguiar and Varuni Pitamber in the sixth over that eventually led to the Cinderella County ladies being reduced to 10-5 by the 10th over.
Singh eventually completed her spell of six overs with five wickets for just four runs. Van Sertima, on the other end also got into the action when she trapped Devine Ross, leg before wicket to break a 24-run partnership between Ross and Avina Ragobeer who top scored with 23.
Ragobeer resisted for 58 balls and spent over an hour at the crease where she struck four boundaries before being stumped by Lashauna Toussaint off of Van Sertima who picked up 4-4 in 25 balls.
Adina Smith was the only other batter to reach double figures with a 16-ball 15 which was highlighted by two boundaries. Akaze Thompson picked up 1-9 to complete a dominating performance with the ball by Demerara.
In the short chase, Toussaint top scored with 25 from 21 balls after hitting four boundaries and added 45 for the opening wicket with Mandy Mangru before she was trapped leg before wicket by Rhona Jhones (1-9).
Mangru carried on to make a ball-a-run 18 not out and was joined by skipper, Cherry Ann Fraser, who saw them over the line with an unbeaten nine.
