Lindener Ebony Grenville recently copped first place in the nail art category in the virtual Caribbean Rising Stars In Beauty Competition, securing a scholarship valued at Bds$5,000 to study cosmetology in Bridgetown, Barbados.
The other categories were won by Grenada’s Lornette Stephen (Hair), Trinidad’s Tia Dinanath (Makeup) and Grenada’s Kelvin Thompson (Barbering).
Ebony, who was one of nine nail artists to compete, is still relishing the win and said, “It feels great.”
She said another Guyanese who competed, Bibi Ally, had to reached out and informed her of the competition and encouraged her to compete. Seeing it as an opportunity for exposure, Ebony wasted no time in signing up and registered as a participant on April 5.
Asked whether she knew what the judges were looking for, the nail artist said that wasn’t shared with her clearly, but it was communicated that she needed to send a video documenting her work on a client. For the four different levels of the nail category, Ebony was required to email four sets of pictures of her work. Though the nail art category saw quite an array of designs, Ebony said she was not worried at all.
The nail artist shared that she is yet to receive information on what exactly she will be studying and for how long. However, she is excited and is gearing up for the opportunity, which is being offered by the Career Development Institute.
Scholarship aside, Ebony is preparing to teach nail courses for the second time at an annual workshop held by Od’s Creative Supplies. The workshop, slated to be conducted in July, will be held in Georgetown, Berbice and Essequibo. The dates are yet to be announced.
