The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is investigating the circumstances that resulted in a policeman fatally shooting a 30-year-old man at Riverview, Ruimveldt on Tuesday.
The dead man has been identified as Deanraj Singh called Steve Singh and according to the Police he was shot sometime around 8 pm.
In a statement the Police related that they were responding to a report of domestic violence committed on Akisha Madramootoo, by Singh against whom she has a protection order. When they arrived at the scene they observed Singh imbibing with friends and when approached, he ran in the direction of the Demerara River and the police gave chase.
Police said that ranks heard noises coming from the bushes on the riverbank and saw Singh with an object in his right hand followed by “a loud explosion” after which the rank responded by firing twice in Singh’s direction.
Singh’s body was discovered on Wednesday by a fisherman and is now at the mortuary awaiting a post- mortem examination. A single suspected gunshot wound to the right side of his abdomen was observed.
