A ninth first-class century from Jamaica Scorpions Jermaine Blackwood frustrated the Guyana Harpy Eagles on the opening day of their fourth-round West Indies Championship clash in Trinidad and Tobago.
Jamaica won the toss and elected to bat first and closed the day on 282 for six after 90 overs with Blackwood heading into the next day on 110 from 251 balls. He struck 14 fours and a six during his innings.
Demetri Cameron got Guyana on their way by removing Leroy Lugg for five after guiding a simple catch to Gudakesh Motie at backward point.
But Blackwood resisted the threat by adding 52 for the second wicket with John Campbell.
Campbell struck seven boundaries during his 58-ball 37, including a sweep through fine leg off of Kevin Sinclair (2-74) but attempted the same shot off the next delivery and was given leg before wicket.
Oraine Williams was also trapped leg before wicket by Sinclair off the next delivery to leave Scorpions 69 for three.
Alwyn Williams forged a 112-run stand with Blackwood and got up to 51 from 113 balls. His innings was highlighted by eight boundaries before being removed by Motie (2-39). Motie also accounted for Paul Palmer who made 18 from 28 balls.
Derval Green did not spend a long time at the crease as Veerasammy Permaul ended his stay for just 13 runs from 35 balls.
Aldane Thomas is currently at the crease on 35 not out from 40 balls and building a steady partnership with Blackwood worth 46 so far.
Over at the clash between Leeward Islands Hurricanes and Windward Islands Volcanoes, Hurricanes closed on 301 for nine from 90 overs after Colin Archibald, batting at number 10, made 104 not out from 97. His innings featured 13 fours and four sixes.
Archibald forged an unbeaten last-wicket partnership of 122 with Daniel Doram who is on 17 not out. Jamar Hamilton also contributed 52 to Hurricanes’ target but it was Preston McSween who ripped through the order, taking 4-78. Keeneth Dember bagged 2-77.
Also, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force were bowled out for 133 in 54.2 overs before Barbados Pride closed the day on 87 for two after 35 overs. Left-arm spinner, Jomel Warrican, rocked Red Force with 3-21 and was supported by Justin Greaves, Ramon Simmonds and Akeem Jordan with two wickets each. Imran Khan top scored with 29.
In Pride’s innings, Raymon Reifer who was promoted to number three in the batting order is unbeaten on 32 from 68 balls and shares an unbroken third wicket partnership with Jonathan Carter who is on 19 not out from 66 balls.
Terrance Hinds removed both openers, Kraigg Brathwaite (06), and Shayne Moseley (24), to end with 2-14. The four-day contest resumes today at 10.00 hours and is streamed on YouTube.
