Mambas and Nets recorded opening night wins in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘Andrew Ifill Knockout Championship’, yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.
Mambas schooled the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans 84-36. Jonathan Pooran top scored with 19 points whilst Brandon Bento, and Emmanuel Archibald assisted with 16 and 15 points respectively.
Adding nine and eight points apiece were Akil Lewis and Jether Harris. For the losers, Orson Smith was the only player in double figures with 13 points, with Dwight McKinnon, and Damani Thomas, the next best scorers with seven and five points correspondingly.
Leading 13-12 at the end of the first period, Mambas extended their advantage, outscoring their foe 15-7 in the second stanza to lead 28-19 at the halftime interval. Mambas further extended their advantage in the pivotal third quarter, scoring 27 points while restricting Trojans to 13 points to lead 55-32.
The scoreline was then sealed as Mambas outshot Trojans 29-4 in the fourth stanza.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) upset the Nets in the second match by a 65-64 scoreline.
Jason Khan and Ronaldo Niles led the winner with 20 and 19 points respectively. For the losers, Royan Wilson, and Dennis Niles scored 20 and 18 points correspondingly.
