Electric fan ignited CID HQ blaze

A Guyana Fire Service (GFS) investigation has found that last week’s fire at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, was caused by a fan that was left plugged in for a prolonged period.

GFS Fire Prevention Officer Sheldon Sauns told Stabroek News that the fire was electrical in origin as the electric fan was left plugged in for a prolonged period and ignited combustible material.

On Monday, May 16, the GFS responded to a call at 10:20 hrs about a fire at the Narcotics Lab of the CID Headquarters.

The fire started at the ground floor level of the southern side of the building.

As a result, water tenders from the Central Fire Station, the Alberttown Fire Station and the Campbellville Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the location and both firefighters and police ranks managed to contain the blaze.

Sections of the building and a quantity of furniture and equipment were damaged by the fire.

Only in November of last year there was a major fire at Eve Leary that destroyed the Office of Professional Responsibility and caused damage to other areas.
