Transfer of sugar research fields cannot be accomplished in willy-nilly way

Dear Editor,

I saw the GuySuCo CEO Sasenarine Singh in the May 20, 2022, Stabroek News saying that the sugar company’s research fields were being transferred to Blairmont Estate. Having read the article I am convinced that he is far out at sea and appears to me clueless about what are the implications of the damage inflicted.

Editor the transferral of the research fields is an exercise that requires careful planning and execution and cannot be accomplished in a willy-nilly way as the CEO makes it sound. Of course, anyone with an iota of experience would know that. Alarmingly it appears most of the technical personnel are not part of the transfer. I shudder to wonder what will become of the research programme following its hasty abortion at LBI.

Editor, sugar like any agricultural crop is based on certain scientific principles. It cannot be tinkered with as some may believe. Of course, the current CEO, from conversations I have had, is no sugar expert no matter his rantings. Given his current course, I must say it appears to me GuySuCo will implode within a year and the sugar industry will be no more.

Yours faithfully,

Liebert Alleyne
