Tagenarine Chanderpaul ended the second day of the West Indies Championship four runs short of his second century of the season as Guyana Harpy Eagles head into day three trailing Jamaica Scorpions by 180 runs.
Resuming on 282 for six, Scorpions managed to reach 393 all out from 109.3 overs shortly before lunch. Guyana’s top order then saw them to 213 for one from 68 overs at the close of play.
Chanderpaul and Hemraj ensured Guyana did not lose a wicket before going to lunch on nine without loss and quickly added 112 for the first wicket. Hemraj was the clear aggressor of that partnership, hitting his 13th first class half century.
The left-hander who was dropped in the slip region while on 48, made 78 from 87 balls. He struck 15 fours and a six which was hoisted over long off before feathering a catch to Aldane Thomas behind the stumps off of Nicholson Gordon one over before tea.
Chanderpaul carried on his innings patiently and followed up his unbeaten scores of 140 and 23 in the previous match with an unfinished 96 from 228 balls. The opener carved 16 boundaries and showed complete control over the Scorpions.
At the other end, Tevin Imlach played the perfect role for Chanderpaul with a resisting 38 not out. His 93-ball innings featured four fours and one six. The pair has already forged an unbeaten 101-run stand.
Earlier, Jermaine Blackwood brought up his century on the previous day but could only add four to his total before leading a simple catch to Chanderpaul at short extra cover off of Keemo Paul (1-71) three overs into the day.
Blackwood departed for 114 from 261 balls, hitting 15 fours and one six along the way and effectively ending a 55-run seventh wicket partnership with Aldane Thomas.
Thomas then shifted gear and moved from his overnight score 35 to 100 from 101 balls. He struck 16 fours and two sixes while adding 76 for the eighth wicket with Jamie Merchant (39) before being stumped by Imlach off of Veerasammy Permaul.
Permaul ended with 3-96 and was supported by his Albion teammate and fellow left-arm spinner, Gudakesh Motie (2-39), off-spinner Kevin Sinclair (2-74) and Demetri Cameron (2-103).
In the other contests, Trinidad and Tobago are 51 for three in their second innings, still trailing Barbados Pride by 110 who posted 294 all out in their first innings. Leeward Islands Hurricanes added 32 to their overnight score before being bowled out for 333 in 95.5 overs. They then rolled over Windward Islands Volcanoes for 173 in 55 overs and closed the day in their second innings on 64 for two after 20 overs.
Hurricanes’ last pair added 154 with Colin Archibald left unbeaten on 106 from 109 balls and Daniel Doram dismissed for 43 from 95 balls. Preston McSween ended with 5-92.
Rahkeem Cornwall ensured Hurricanes a solid lead by picking up 5-61 with his off-spin and complimented by Jeremiah Louis with 3-26. Keron Cottoy played the lone hand for Volcanoes with 73 not out from 97 balls.
In Hurricanes’ second innings Montcin Hodge (24) and Kieran Powell (18) were the batsmen dismissed. Ross Powell is unbeaten on 14 while Devon Thomas is on three.
