Several communities in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Upper Berbice) have been severely affected by flooding after recent rainfall and the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) said it is ready to help the region and others parts of the country.
The CDC in a statement on Thursday night said that it is prepared to lend support to communities in Kwakwani and others parts of the region which are under water due to the heavy rainfall and the swollen river.
Lamp Island and Ladernsville in Aroraima were identified as the communities that are severely affected by the flooding in the region.
The CDC noted that residents in those areas have indicated that their farms are flooded and the constant increase of water in the communities also suggest that homes are currently being affected. As a result, the relocation of assets, including livestock, has started.
According to the CDC, 37 households are affected at Lamp Island, but due the houses being built on stilts, it was reported that the water levels are only high in the yards. However, those families have since opted to stay with friends and other relatives in other areas.
The regional authorities and the CDC, along with the Ministry of Education, were also in the process of establishing shelters for the affected residents.
In addition, as of Thursday, the Kwakwani waterfront had seen at least three feet of rising water, which was then affecting the flow of transportation across the Berbice River.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Phillips has assured flood relief would be made available to the residents of the region. Phillips also advised persons living in the low-lying, flood-prone and riverine areas to strongly consider relocating permanently.
He had also noted that the flood pattern which is being looked at between Lethem and Kwakwani can be overcome.
In addition to Region Ten, regions Two, Five, Nine have been severely affected by heavy rainfall during the past week.
A Department of Public Information Facebook post said the water in Region Nine is receding.
