Candidate Master Wendell Meusa maintains lead in the Open division

Candidate Master Wendell Meusa maintains his lead in the Open division despite losing to Robert Neto, while Nellisha Johnson, Sasha Shariff, and Pooja Lam, are currently tied atop the Women’s divisional standings in the National Chess Championships.

Neto defeated Meusa in the sixth round of the nine stanza tournament to move onto 3.5 points. Meusa remained in the pole position heading into the seventh round on 5 points. Taffin Khan is in close pursuit of the leader on 4.5 points, while Frankie Farley, Ethan Lee, and Anthony Drayton, sit on 4, 4, and 3.5 points respectively.

Meanwhile, the trio of Johnson, Shariff, and Lam, are locked on 5 points each after six fixtures. The duo of Adia Alphonso, and Maliha Rajkumar are on 3 points apiece.  

According to an official release from the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), “The Open and Women Nationals are being run concurrently at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence and will end on Sunday May 29th. At the conclusion of the National Tournaments, along with its point-based system of calculation from its Grand Prix Tournaments, the GCF will determine the members of its 10 member Olympiad Team destined for Chennai, India in July/August 2022 to participate in the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad.”

The Open Championship is being sponsored by Gaico Construction, while KFC Guyana is the sponsor of the Women’s Tournament.
