Family members of Omega Ault, the teacher whose decomposed body was discovered in her Crane, West Coast Demerara (WCD) home on Friday, are struggling to come to grips with her gruesome death and they said they were not aware of her having any problems with her husband of more than 15 years.
“She is very quiet. Very, very quiet. She don’t disclose her problem to anybody…She never tell me nothing. She never give we a sign that she had problem or whatever it is. She never, never disclose that…Everybody is so shock that this happen because my brother-in-law was such a loving person but after what happen like we can’t even get a grip up to now,” Tracy Ault, one of the dead woman’s sisters, told Sunday Stabroek on Saturday.
Tracy explained that Omega and her husband, Clarence Farley, had been married for more than 15 years and at no point during this time did her sister ever communicated to her that she was experiencing problems in her relationship.
The decomposed body of 41-year-old Omega was discovered by her brother, Kevin Ault, on Friday afternoon at her Crane Public Road, WCD apartment.
The Guyana Police Force has since issued a wanted bulletin for Farley, called ‘Junior,’ 41, of 1A ‘X’ New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, WCD and Lot 291 Section ‘A’ Block ‘Y’ Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara.
He is suspected to have murdered Omega. While the police had said that he committed the act sometime between May 14 and Friday, the woman was last seen alive by her sister and others on Saturday, May 21.
According to the police, their enquiries revealed that the couple had been encountering marital problems. Tracy noted that she last saw Omega on Saturday, May 21, and everything appeared normal. The couple shared a 3-year-old child.
Tracy said she takes care of the child from time to time since he was a newborn. She related that on Wednesday morning, Farley took the child to her Diamond, East Bank Demerara house and left him, promising to return for him in the afternoon or the following morning.
While Farley did not return for the child, Tracy said she didn’t sense anything was amiss and instead assumed her sister was busy. “My brother-in-law bring my nephew Wednesday morning…He told me he would pick him up the afternoon or the next day…My mind didn’t even click thinking that something was wrong because my sister was a teacher. So I said CXC going on and Independence, so she would be busy,” Tracy told this newspaper.
In a statement issued on Friday night, the police said Kevin reported to ranks at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station that he had been calling Omega but was not getting through to her for two weeks.
As a result, Kevin said he went to her address at Crane and after calling and getting no response, he pushed open the front door to the house and was met by an odour.
He then went into the front room of the house and saw the decomposing body of his sister lying motionless. The police were then alerted.
Very peaceful
When Sunday Stabroek visited the scene yesterday, residents in the area were tightlipped about the discovery.
The couple rented an apartment.
Tenants who live in the building where the couple lived said they only know them by seeing them around. “As much as we live hay we never really break a word to one another,” one tenant, who wished not to be named, said.
The man explained that he last saw Omega last Saturday. “The door was open and she was in the kitchen,” he said.
In the afternoon, he said he left for Linden and only returned Wednesday. “When I came back Wednesday, the door was locked. Thursday the door was locked. Friday the door was locked so we didn’t tek it fah nothing because we know is customary, a person would be out for two days and then you would see them back,” the tenant related.
According to the man, the couple appeared to be living a “very peaceful” life. “I never heard them arguing or so. They appeared to be living very peaceful,” he said.
Meanwhile, one of Omega’s cousins, who asked not to be named, explained to Sunday Stabroek that like every couple, Omega and Farley had arguments and scuffles.
However, she said they would not share details with family members but would “trash it out” among themselves. “Omega is a very private and secretive person. If she get a problem with she husband, she wouldn’t call and say well she and she husband get a row or a fight or whatever. They would trash it out,” the cousin said.
The woman further explained that she was at home on Wednesday when Farley bought the child and left him with Tracy.
She too said that after Farley did not return for the child, the family did not become suspicious but was happy to have him for additional time.
However, the cousin told Sunday Stabroek that the family sensed something was amiss when calls to Omega’s phone went unanswered. They said it was customary for her to video chat with Tracy every night. “It was weird and unusual that she (Omega) didn’t called that night or the next day or whatever,” the cousin said.
According to the cousin, Kevin worked in the interior as a mechanic with Farley.
She said Kevin was there since May 5th and only returned on Friday to check on Omega.
Throughout the last week, she said, family members, including Omega’s siblings, called her numerous times but got no answer. “They tried several times but no response or anything and they tried calling Farley as well….Kevin said he ain’t getting onto Farley or Omega phone and he wanted to know what’s up…He say he want know that a truck coming out and if he should catch the truck,” the cousin related.
She said that Kevin initially didn’t want to go but Tracy insisted. “Kevin catch the truck and he come out. When he come out Tracy tell him ‘look what you need to do is go over there and see what happen to Omega. Probably she sick and she don’t want to get anybody worried…She mus’ ’e probably went to the hospital and she need some time so she mus’ ’e probably send she son.’ We didn’t think so far,” the cousin said.
