Lucretia Bradford, Essequibo’s oldest woman, turned 105 last Wednesday.
Having achieved the milestone, Bradford credited her faith as well as her healthy diet for her long and healthy life.
“I read my Bible daily and I would teach my grandchildren verses from the Bible and I would share my knowledge. It is what keep me alive,” Bradford, a member of the Methodist church, said.
Bradford also noted that that she grew up knowing that she had to eat “healthy” in order to fortify her immune system. Her daily meals consists of a lot of “veggies” as well as of fruits.
She also said that she usually boils “ginger” and “turmeric” to drink and would do so regularly.
Bradford, who only complains of blurred vision, has not gotten ill during the COVID-19 pandemic and she also credited that to her diet.
Bradford lives with her daughter, Patsy Bradford.
“I remember how I used to take care of my seven children after my husband passed out. Out of the seven only three are alive.
I live most of my life at Cullen, where I grew up and got married,” she said, while recalling working laboriously to fetch stones to build the roads in the area. She also recalled helping women in the village with home remedies.
She said long ago women in the village would come together and do community work.
Celebrating her birthday on the day before Guyana observed its independence anniversary, Bradford said that her only wish for the country was for persons to live in peace and harmony as one people.
