Team Executive were crowned the inaugural champions of the first ever, Prime Minister’s Independence Dominoes Competition on Friday at Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major’s residence in Linden.
Hosting an astonishing 30 teams, the action began at 14.00 hours on Thursday last and went all the way to past 04.00 hours on Friday. Executive walked away $500,000 richer while Gold is Money settled for second with a prize $300,000. Yarrowkabra ended in third to pocket $100,000.
According to co-organiser, Colin ‘BL’ Aaron, the tournament was a success. “The tournament was very successful with 30 teams coming out and playing in a competition of high competitiveness and enthusiasm.”
Aaron recalled that when Prime Minister, Brigadier (R’td) Mark Phillips arrived, everyone stopped and stood at attention before applauding him for taking this step.
Aaron indicated that the Prime Minister has indicated an interest in making the tournament an annual fixture under his office and name with domino lovers already expressing their interest in being part of the next edition.
Aaron explained that the lien title will see teams requiring to win the championship on three occasions before being allowed to keep the trophy.
The co-organiser extended his gratitude to the Prime Minister for coming on board as a title sponsor for the tournament and commended him for his interest in the development of sports in Guyana.
