A boat captain is now missing and another man was injured after the vessel which they were in collided with another in the Mazaruni River on Saturday afternoon.

The missing man has been identified as Fabian Sam of Jawalla Village.

According to a police report, the collision occurred around 17.45hrs at Jawalla Village, Upper Mazaruni.

At the time, Sam was operating a 35-foot-long boat powered by a 30 HP outboard engine.

The boat had five occupants including Charles Hernandez, who was injured. He is currently receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The police said enquiries revealed that Sam was navigating his boat along the Mazaruni River and upon approaching the confluence of the Mazaruni and Kukui rivers, the light from the other boat was observed approaching head-on from the opposite direction.

In an attempt to get the other boat to change direction, the police said Hernandez flashed his torchlight in a bid to avoid a collision but to no avail.

As a result, the boats collided and Sam was thrown overboard. A search for him has proved futile.

The 48-year-old captain of the other boat is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
