Dear Editor,
I write to highlight the garbage collection problem affecting my village Cummings Lodge which is located east of the Cyril Potter College of Education on U.G. Road. This is the last George-town Ward to the East.
Originally the City’s Solid Waste Management Department issued a schedule that Tuesday would be the day that garbage would be cleared then they changed it to Wednesday. For the longest while there have been numerous delays when garbage is to be cleared. As I type this letter on Monday morning, May 30, garbage is still on the streets since last week and the stray horses and pigs are making a mess of the parapets. Numerous calls to the Solid Waste Department are unanswered.
On every occasion when there is a delay, the workers on the truck would say that the vehicle broke down. My research revealed that only one private truck works from Prashad Nagar to Cummings Lodge and with the inefficient service provided by this contractor I am surprised that he still has the contract.
I would like to call on the Honourable Minister of Local Government Mr. Nigel Dharamlall whose portfolio garbage collection falls under and who lives in our village to be more vigilant of his surroundings and do something about the situation and also investigate the questionable performance of this contractor. There are several garbage bins on the streets right next to his home since last week so he should be aware of the situation.
I take this opportunity to thank Stabroek News which has highlighted problems in our community in the past through the Letter Column.
Yours faithfully,
R. Khan
