Sandip Waste Management Services has partially resumed the collection of garbage in the city with the return to service of one of its trucks.
The other trucks are yet to resume work as the company tries to resolve the issues it is facing with its vehicles.
A Sandip spokesperson told Stabroek News on Monday that due to the recent rainfall, the Lusignan landfill site was in a deplorable condition.
When this newspaper visited the site it was observed that the road is made up of silty clay, which becomes slushy when it rains.
An official at the landfill site told this newspaper that when there is heavy rainfall some trucks would usually get stuck while emptying garbage and can sometimes be there for hours before they can be removed.
As this newspaper previously reported, Sandip for the past week has been experiencing difficulties with its garbage collection trucks and this has resulted in rubbish piling up in certain parts of the municipality.
Several attempts to get a comment on the situation from the city’s Director of Solid Waste Walter Narine on interim measures have been in vain.
Sandip is responsible for the collection of garbage within the following areas: Campbellville Housing Scheme and section L-M Campbellville on Mondays; Belvoir Court, Prashad Nagar, Bel Air Promenade, New Haven, Bel-Air village, Blygezeight, North Sophia, Liliendaal, Turkeyen, Atlantic Ville, Pattensen, University Gardens and Cummings Lodge on Tuesdays. The company has said that it is working hard to resolve the issues so that things can go back to normal as soon as possible.
