A man was on Tuesday charged with manslaughter over the stabbing death of an engineer at Better Hope and he was granted bail of $500,000.
Forty-year-old Stherlinga Gilkes of Victoria Road, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool where he was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The charge against the accused states that on May 29th, 2022 in the vicinity of Zahora Street, Better Hope, ECD, he unlawfully killed Neil Rampersaud.
Bail was then set in the sum of $500,000 and the matter was adjourned until July 8th, 2022 for reports.
According to the facts which were read in the court, Rampersaud and the suspect were known to each other and were on speaking terms.
However, on the day in question, at about 7.38 am, Rampersaud approached Gilkes and demanded that he go to the station for allegedly wounding Rampersaud’s friend, Mohan Panchu earlier that morning.
The two men then got into a heated argument during which Rampersaud dealt the accused two lashes about his body. The accused then armed himself with a coconut blade and dealt Rampersaud a stab to his chest causing him severe injuries.
Rampersaud was immediately picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Woodland Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The matter was later reported and the defendant was apprehended.
