A man was yesterday jailed for 10 months after pleading guilty to assaulting a policeman at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Seon Prince of Plaisance was charged after the circulation of a video showing the beating of peace officer, Shawn Maxwell.
The charge which was read to Prince by Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court stated that on May 31st, 2022 at Plaisance, ECD, he assaulted Sergeant Maxwell, a Peace Officer while he was acting in the execution of his duties.
Based on the facts provided, on the said day, at about 10:51 am, the sergeant was on the Force’s motor vehicle, PAB 3135, along with other ranks of the Sparendaam Police Station district, when he received a call and was informed of an act of damage to property.
As such, Maxwell went in search of the suspect who was later apprehended. The officer then told the accused of the allegation which subsequently resulted in a brawl. It was said that the accused dealt the complainant several cuffs to his face causing him to suffer injuries. At one point in the video, the policeman could be seen on the floor.
