Police yesterday said they are investigating the suspected drowning of a 19-year-old Victoria, East Coast Demerara resident, whose body was discovered floating in the Ekereku River, Upper Mazaruni on Tuesday morning.
The dead teen has been identified as Simon Jones.
The police in a press release yesterday said that initial enquiries revealed that Jones was last seen alive around 23.30hrs last Friday while attempting to swim across the Ekereku River.
Around 10 am on Tuesday, the police said that three miners were traversing the river when they observed Jones’ body floating in the river.
The police were informed and his body was retrieved. There was no visible mark of violence.
Jones’ body was transported to Georgetown and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
