An early morning fire erupted yesterday on the ground floor of Clippers Barber and Beauty at Camp Street, Georgetown.
The fire, determined to be electrical, was contained after a quick response by the Guyana Fire Service (GFS).
The GFS confirmed that it received a call at 05:24 hrs alerting it to a fire at the three-storey building housing the business. Four fire tenders responded from the Central Fire Station, the Alberttown Fire Station and the Campbellville Fire Station.
Fire Prevention Officer Sheldon Sauns, in an interview with Stabroek News, stated that the GFS’ investigation concluded that the fire was the result of an electrical fan being plugged in for a prolonged period and becoming overheated and igniting nearby combustibles.
While the fire was quickly contained, the ceiling of the ground floor, the shutters, a quantity of supplements, clothing, fans, lights, two display cabinets and other equipment were damaged. At the time of the fire no employee was present in the building.
Owner Terrence Edwards stated that the GFS arrived promptly, while noting that he received a call at approximately 05:11 hrs and when he arrived on the scene not too long after, three of the GFS’s firefighting trucks were already there along with Guyana Power and Light (GPL). “I thank God that it was contained to the ground floor and it didn’t affect any of our other buildings because I have my sister next door at Burger King, also my neighbour, Galaxy, next door,” he said.
