Dear Editor,
The proposed one off payout to the fisherfolk community to assist their circumstances is commendable. Sections of the populace are already labeling the exercise as another payout, another scam in the making.
Given the experiences with the payout to farmers affected by flooding and the skullduggeries unearthed, ultra-proof and airtight systems must be in place to avoid a repeat of those situations and to ensure deserving persons are the real beneficiaries. The lessons learnt from the farmers’ debacle must guide this process.
Persons found manipulating or aiding and abetting for personal gain and benefit must be dealt with condignly.
Yours faithfully,
Shamshun Mohamed
