The administering of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine specially made for children ages 5 to 11 will commence on Saturday.
According to the Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, over 50,000 vaccines arrived in Guyana yesterday and as such, the ministry has planned a drive-thru exercise which will facilitate the administration of the vaccine on Saturday on the tarmac at the National Culture Centre. The vaccines were donated by Spain.
The Minister reminded parents that their consent for the administration of the vaccine is required.
A release from the Spanish Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago said that 52,800 doses of the paediatric vaccine were donated.
This donation, the release said, is in addition to the 28,800 doses donated in February of this year by Johnson & Johnson through the COVAX mechanism.
“These figures place Spain as one of the largest vaccine donors in the country and the second largest on the continent. They demonstrate, once again, Spain’s commitment to the health and well-being of the Guyanese people”, the release said.
It added that the donation is one more action of the “Team Europe” in Guyana formed by the EU and its Member States.
