The Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) has commended President Irfaan Ali and the government for the recently announced $100,000 cash grant for each child with a disability.
In a press release issued on Monday, the GCOPD also welcomed Ali’s pledge to address the longstanding difficulties children and adults encounter in trying to access public assistance from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
On the latter announcement, the GCOPD stated that as a national organisation it has been asking for years for the challenges of accessing the monthly public assistance to be addressed.
In his announcement, Ali stated that business and training centres for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) would be established in all the regions in Guyana and the (GCOPD) is pleased with the initiative. The GCOPD stated that the measures would have a positive impact on the lives of persons with disabilities, which it called an impoverished community, and that it would facilitate their economic empowerment.
The GCOPD added that it is appreciative of the efforts made by Ali and his administration to enhance the lives of PWDS since assuming office in August 2020 and reiterated its commitment to working with the government to promoting and fulfilling the rights of the PWDs.
