Aimed at creating a self-sustaining food supply within the prison system, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) through its agriculture programme harvested vegetables and fruits at its farms recently.
A quantity of eschellot, cauliflower, pineapple, bananas and plantains were harvested, a release from the Ministry of Home Affairs stated.
Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, said that for the first half of the year the GPS has reaped 2,085 kilogrammes (kg) of boulanger, 979 kg of bora, 1463 kg of pak choy, 591 kg of pumpkin, 304 kg of papaya, 590 kg of passion fruit, 236 kg of cherry, 9,831 kg of chicken, and 941 trays of eggs.
Over 60 inmates are currently been trained in agricultural production.
