A woman working in the Puruni backdam, Cuyuni/Mazaruni in Region Seven was on Wednesday robbed and murdered.
The suspect is in the custody of the police, Divisional Commander, Senior Superintendent Dion Moore said.
The woman has been identified as 25-year-old Mariam Edwards, who worked as a cook at a mining camp.
It was reported that Edwards had been robbed and murdered by a man who was said to be working in the area.
The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday night by public-spirited citizens and yesterday handed over to police who responded to the report of the crime.
Moore yesterday told Stabroek News that due to the condition of the trail, it has been difficult for police to easily access the scene of the crime. He noted that the poor condition of the road has also contributed to the lengthy time it took for ranks to respond to the report.
Details of the crime are sketchy, however Moore said when investigators have the opportunity to question the suspect, they will have a better understanding of what really occurred.
