A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) yesterday extended congratulations to the Alliance For Change (AFC) on the “successful staging” of its 7th National Conference on Saturday.
“We specially wish to congratulate Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan for retaining his position as Party Leader”, a statement from the party said.
Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey C. Norton, has already called Ramjattan to offer his personal congratulations, the statement said.
APNU lauded the decision of the delegates at the National Conference to recommit to the APNU+AFC coalition ideal.
“This decision will add impetus to the joint efforts of our parties to rescue Guyana from the ravages of the PPP government and ultimately to defeat it at the next national election”, the statement added.
APNU and the AFC have had periods of tense relations since the formation of the coalition on February 14th 2015. One of the lowest points saw the AFC contesting local government elections on its own in 2018.
In a statement on Saturday, the AFC said that the conference examined “The way forward” and it was decided that members are in favour of remaining in partnership with the APNU until the expiration of the Cummingsburg Accord in December 2022, when it will be reviewed.
However, the party said that the “conference demanded in the meantime that the AFC secure a firm agreement and structure for it to have greater influence on policy positions and political actions within the alliance (with APNU), while maintaining its independence, rebranding and regaining its identity.”
