Bartica man jailed for four years over AR-15 rifle

A Bartica man who was wanted by police for questioning into the discovery of high-powered weapons was on Friday charged and sentenced to four years imprisonment.

Twenty-seven-year-old Navindra Ramsammy of Lot 32, First Avenue, Bartica, was slapped with four charges and pleaded guilty to two. He appeared in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Crystal Lambert.

The first charge stated that on the 31st May at Blackwater Backdam he had in his possession an AR-15 Rifle and 27 rounds of .223 ammunition, without being a licenced firearm holder. The second charge alleged that between 28 December 2021 and 31 May 2022 he received stolen property – one shotgun, the property of Wayne Heber.

He pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to four years on each count and fined $100,000 on each. The sentences will run concurrently.

Meanwhile, Ramsammy pleaded not guilty to another charge which alleged that on June 4th he had in his possession three rifles and one shotgun at Karrau Backdam, Lower Mazaruni River.

He also pleaded not guilty to a charge of threatening behaviour committed on Abdool Pooran on the 28th May 2022 at Black Water Backdam. 

He was remanded on the latter charges and will make his next court appearance on July 8.
