The Guyana Chess Federation yesterday stated that promising junior player Ethan Lee will replace national men’s champion Wendell Meusa on the team to compete at next month’s Chess Olympiad in India.
The 44th Fide, Chess Olympiad will be held in Chennai, India from July 28 – August 8th.
According to the GCF, Candidate Master, Meusa, who recently triumphed at the national championships, has advised them that he was withdrawing from the team.
“The GCF accepted the notice received from Wendell Meusa advising that he was withdrawing from the team to travel to India,” the GCF stated in a release to the media.
Meusa ended the nine-round Swiss system national championships with eight points following seven wins and one defeat to Roberto Neto.
He was tipped to play on Board One.
That honour will now go to Taffin Khan, who finished as runner-up to Meusa at the national championships a mere half a point behind the champion.
According to the release, GCF president Frankie Farley, was next in line to replace Meusa but he declined.
“The next player in line to replace him was Frankie Farley who had accumulated the sixth highest Grand Prix points.
Farley, however, declined to accept the nomination, indicating that it would be an ideal opportunity for the multi-talented junior player Lee to participate and learn from the experience,” the release stated.
Lee gained the seventh highest Grand Prix points.
“The GCF wishes the entire team the best of luck and urges the players to perform at their best,” the release ended.
