The Rotary Club of Stabroek recently completed its Academic Bowl which resulted in Ethan Gursahai from St Joseph High School being judged as the overall winner.
In a statement, the Rotary Club of Stabroek said that the competition was executed in collaboration with the BrainStreet Group and ExxonMobil Guyana and targeted Grade Nine students across the country.
It said that the main objectives of the initiative were to foster the pursuit of excellence in a spirit of academic competition and good sportsmanship as well as encourage interaction between schools and the community. The subject areas for the competition were English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.
Preliminary rounds of the competition were held online over a four-week period during March and April and the semi-final and final rounds were held on April 23rd at the University of Guyana’s IT Centre for Academic Excellence.
The competition commenced with 92 registrants from which the top 15 scorers were drawn.
Cynthia Alick and Aqil Elcock from St Joseph High School and Queen’s College, respectively, were tied for second place while Angel DeVarel and Dwayne Hinkson from Queen’s College and The Bishops’ High School finished in third place. Closing out the top 10 were Dequan Duke from President’s College and from St Joseph High – Ezekiel Shepherd, Eziekel Harding, Karl Bostwick and Makayla McIntosh.
All the winners were awarded laptops, tablets and other prizes.
The Rotary Club of Stabroek said it was extremely satisfied with the implementation of this activity and that the club will continue to look for ways in which they can continue to contribute towards improving academic excellence in Guyana.
It President, Carlotta Boodie lauded the initiative adding ““We were truly impressed with their resilience and competitive spirit. We also celebrate the partnerships we have developed over the years with our literacy projects. ExxonMobil and the BrainStreet Group have made a huge difference to our reach. Our club is now able to engage children in most if not all the regions of Guyana.”
The Club also expressed its thanks to the many teachers drawn from schools in Georgetown and Regions 2 and 6 who were contracted to develop the questions for the competition.
