The affiliate associations/federations of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) will today be tasked with deciding whether or not changes will be made to its constitution based on the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The IOC, the parent body of the GOA has made recommendations to ratify its constitution some of which includes an age limit cap of 70 to its office bearers along with term limits.
Following the all-important Special General Meeting which starts at 17:30hrs at Olympic House, member affiliates will determine in large part the direction sports will undertake for the next four years and beyond.
Contacted yesterday for a comment on whether he thinks the associations should vote to implement or reject the recommendations made by the IOC, long standing President of the GOA, K Juman-Yassin stated that he will make his thoughts known following the meeting.
Based on how the associations vote, the outcome may or may not impact the future of the 76 year-old Juman Yassin who has been at the helm of the body for the past 26 years.
Meanwhile, the constitutional review has been ongoing for more than two years and some of the key constitutional provisions for change include a recommendation by the IOC in its governance principles to limit the age of Executive Members of the IOC and its affiliates members of national Olympic Committees ( GOA in this instance) to seventy 70 years.
Additionally, a motion for the institution of term limits was brought up at the last AGM held in 2016 by the Guyana Squash Association and unanimously agreed on by the General Council.
The adoption of a Finance Committee to manage the funds of the GOA’s asset management and the issue of non-functioning associations/federations will also be debated since it is felt that several national associations/federations are just vote props, as they do not host any national activities, AGM, have no functional executive committees or councils, but turn up for elections of the GOA.
