A Corentyne woman and her husband are now nursing injuries after their neighbour launched an attack on them after they offered assistance to the attacker’s abused wife.
Tilawti Singh, also known as ‘Angela’, 44, a livestock farmer, of Lot 437 Block Five Ankerville, Port Mourant, sustained five chop injuries: two on her left arm, two on her hip, and one on her right leg.
Her husband sustained a chop injury on his hand when he attempted to rescue her from the perpetrator.
According to the woman, she was in her hammock with her granddaughter, 3, around 9 pm on Wednesday when the man launched the attack. “He come in and he wife been sit at the table and he fire couple chop on her but she jump over and then he start chop me and say how I give the police evidence and he call the police name that tell me.”
Singh and her husband were taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where the woman was eventually transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. As of yesterday afternoon, she was discharged but now has to have her wounds dressed every day for the next couple of months.
“Right now we scared because this man say he go get bail and come back to done we, he a threaten me husband and me son a live on the main road he does go till deh fa fight.”
Stabroek News was told that the man was arrested sometime yesterday.
The woman explained yesterday, that the attacker and his wife along with the woman’s three children resided behind her premises for the last year and a half.
According to her, the man would often abuse his wife and even threatened to kill her and her children numerous times.
Although not being related to the abused woman, Singh noted, she would often intervene and “rescue her.”
However, she said, the woman took a stand back in March over a certain matter and the police became involved. Singh said she gave a statement to the police on the matter.
According to Singh, while the matter was being investigated the man was asked to move out of the house since the woman had obtained a restraining order from the court for the abuse.
She said that about two weeks ago the man attempted to break into the house, “She call me and say look he deh on the step taking out the window and that she call police and them say them ain’t get patrol van and then I call the Commander and the patrol come and them carry he down.”
However, the man was eventually given bail although breaching the restraining order, “When the girl go (to) court them tell her no charge there for him breaching the restraining order and them give her another date.”
According to Singh, since the man attempted to break into the house the woman has been scared for her life and has been staying mostly over at her residence along with her children.
“Me try to get she help and get her in one shelter, everybody that you can think of me go too but me na get through… Me deh tell she we go see and get she in one shelter and she go live in peace but now me scared to because this man say he gon come kill us.”
She stressed that they would often phone the Whim Police Station but sometimes they would not get any assistance as they were often told that no patrol vehicle was available.
Meanwhile, APNU+AFC Member of Parliament, Dineshwar Jaipersaud, who resides in the community stated that he is aware of the matter and commended Singh for assisting the woman and ultimately putting her own life in danger.
Jaipersaud opined that the police could have played a role in dealing with the matter from the onset as according to him they did not take it seriously although numerous reports were made including by him. He then called on ranks to ensure that when similar matters are reported that they are dealt with urgently.
Singh is still seeking assistance for the battered woman and her children and can be contacted on telephone number 660 – 0340.
