Wrong body buried after NA funeral home mix up

An East Canje Berbice family is now camped out in front of a funeral parlour in New Amsterdam after the body of their deceased relative was handed over to another family, which carried out a funeral and buried it on Tuesday.

The relatives of Mohabir Ragasammy, 79, of Reliance, East Canje, Berbice, are now in a state of frustration and have gone to the New Amsterdam Police Station to file a report.

Stabroek News was told that the two deceased were COVID-19 fatalities and as a result the parlour, Persaud Funeral Home, was responsible for preparing the dead bodies for the funerals as is done in such cases.

According to a relative, when they showed up this morning to oversee the preparation of Ragasammy’s body, they discovered that the body was not his. “We see that is not he on the table and them can’t find him in the whole parlour and them na find me dad,” his daughter reported.

It was then discovered that Ragasammy’s body was handed over to another family on Tuesday. A member of that family was then contacted and visited the parlour and he identified the body there to be that of his father this morning. “…He gone Central Police Station to get a paper to go break the tomb now to get my father out of there”, Ragasammy’s daughter explained.

The families are both confused as to what their next step will be as they expressed disappointment in the staff at the parlour. “Them na tell we nothing. We outside here. Them na come out and tell we nothing,” another relative added this morning.
