Trinidad and Tobago Women got off to a solid start in the CG Insurance Super50 Cup by beating Leeward Islands by eight wickets yesterday at the National Stadium, Providence.
Batting first, Leewards posted 132 for eight from their allotted 50 overs while Trinidad reached 134 for two with 90 balls to spare. Leewards were reduced to 13 for four as Kirbyina Alexander ripped through the top order with 3-20 but Shawnisha Hector resisted with a gritty knock of 46 from 60 balls. The left hander struck seven boundaries and added 52 for the fifth wicket with Arsheena Freeman (03) before being run out.
A late flurry by Rozel Liburd and Amanda Edwards ensured Leewards a respectable total as they shared a 45-run partnership for the eighth wicket.
Liburd managed to stroke three boundaries during her unbeaten 31 from 39 balls while Edwards reached 29 from 41 balls having blasted four boundaries before being run out.
Trinidad’s chase was in cruise control as Reniece Boyce and Djenaba Joseph laid the foundation with an opening stand of 71.
Boyce top scored with 35 from 56 balls. Her innings featured four boundaries while Joseph made 15 before being bowled by Qiana Joseph.
Shenelle Lord then ensured her side got over the line with 30 not out from 53 balls. She carved five boundaries and partnered with Anisa Mohammed to share in an unfinished 57-run union.
Mohammed was also not out on 20 from 54 balls. She stroked two boundaries.
Today, the clash of the giants will get underway as defending champions, Barbados take on the T20 Blaze champions, Jamaica at Providence.
