According to a new study, the two Antarctic glaciers – the Thwaites Glacier, also known as Doomsday Glacier about the size of Great Britain, and the slightly smaller Pine Island Glacier – are melting so fast that they are now losing ice at a faster rate than any time over the past 5,500 years. This occurrence is due mainly to global warming and climate change that have seen dramatic rise in sea levels. The rapid retreat of these two glaciers could reduce the size of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and could potentially contribute as much as eleven feet to global sea level rise over the next several centuries. In the last 40 years, the Thwaites Glacier lost around 595 billion tons of ice, contributing to a four percent rise in sea levels.
