Residents of Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge, want action to address the deplorable state of the street.
Resident R. Khan, in a letter to the editor published in the June 16 edition of Stabroek News, decried the potholes, saying that they started out as a few small holes about six months ago and have since expanded to become huge craters.
When Stabroek News visited the area, a resident, who wished not to be named, said, “Because of the big potholes here, when trucks pass the place would usually be vibrating and sometimes shaking. It is getting big by the day. It start off small and now look at it today. This road needs to be fixed because for persons who have vehicle that is how it will be damaged over time.”
In the letter, Khan said residents of Cummings Lodge, Industry, university students and public transport operators were those most affected by the situation.
Khan added that contact was made with three Senior Officers of the Ministry of Public Works and noted that all of them seemed willing to help but indicated that a letter from a Minister would be needed.
Khan lamented the “system of begging Ministers to get things done,” saying it must stop, before publicly appealing to the Minister of Local Government Nigel Dharamlall “to step out of his yard, walk for two minutes in an easterly direction and forward an email to the relevant Ministry so that hundreds of drivers would no longer be inconvenienced.”
