National player Shemar Britton was the winner of the first, of two sets of trial matches organised by the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA).

The matches were played at the National Gymnasium Saturday night.

Southpaw Britton played unbeaten in the five-person round-robin men’s trials while Thuraia Thomas defeated Jasmine Billingy to win the female trials.

Britton ended with four wins from as many matches while Jonathan Van Lange was second with three wins and one defeat.

The other three players Elishaba Johnson, Joel Alleyne and Miiguel Wong ended in a three-way tie.

Third place eventually went to Johnson while Alleyne finished fourth and Wong, fifth.

The second set of matches were scheduled to be played last night at the same venue.

According to a press release from the GTTA, its Committee of Management, along with Cuban coach Osdani Romero Cuban and national coach Idi Lewis met and ratified the implementation of trial matches to help  select the national team members for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for July/August.

Those invited to participate in the two trials were (men) Christopher Franklin, Britton, Van Lange, Wong, Alleyne and Johnson and Natalie Cummings, Priscilla Greaves,  Thomas and Billingy (women).

According to the GTTA release, some of the players were not attending training sessions while others were too relaxed during the sessions hence the need for the trials.

Franklin, male, and female players Natalie Cummings and Priscilla Graves, failed to participate in the first trials.
