Guyanese fisherman stabbed to death during Suriname bar fight

A Guyanese fisherman died on Tuesday evening after he was involved in a bar fight in Suriname with several persons over a female.

According to information gathered, he was stabbed twice and three persons have since been arrested.

Herman Dexter, 28, was stabbed once in the heart and on another part of his upper body at a bar located on Eugene Gesselstraat (Hoogestraat), Paramaribo.

According to a source in Suriname, three suspects have since been arrested. The source said, two of the men were arrested in a hotel at Slangenhoutstraat, while the third was detained on Vangbalstraat.

Stabroek News was told that Dexter was at the bar when the three men arrived. The source said police in Suriname have since learned that an argument ensued between the group of men about a woman which quickly led to an altercation during which Dexter was stabbed.

Based on a CCTV video seen by this newspaper of the incident, Dexter was noticed arguing with a suspect who was leaving in a car outside of the bar. However, the man quickly exited the car while armed with a knife. He and Dexter then scuffled and it was then that Dexter was stabbed twice.

Dexter then rushed into the bar where he collapsed and the suspect and his friends escaped. Stabroek News was told that Dexter died at the location.

Dexter’s body is currently being held by the police in Suriname for a post-mortem examination.
