Police are probing the theft of some $600,000 which was secured in a motor car that was parked on Church Street on Monday afternoon.
According to investigations, the cash belonging to the Phenotech Company located at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara was placed in the glove compartment of the vehicle.
The robbery occurred between 2.47 pm and 3.43 pm while the company’s Administrator, Nickesha Garraway and driver had gone to Regent Street.
Police said Garraway earlier in the day had visited Scotia Bank on Carmichael Street where she withdrew $1.2M in cash from the company’s account and placed same in a brown envelope.
She related that upon entering her car which was being driven by a 29-year-old male of Hadfield Street, Lodge, she placed the cash in the glove compartment. The woman told detectives that she spent $600,000 and placed the remaining $600,000 back into the glove compartment.
After completing a transaction on Hadfield Street, she told police that they went to Church Street and parked a short distance away from Waterloo Street. The driver, she said, secured the vehicle and they proceeded to Regent Street to continue shopping.
On their return, Garraway told the police she noticed that one of the car windows had been broken. She immediately made checks for the money but it had disappeared. The police were informed and the car was dusted for prints.
