Two men arrested after what police said was a drug deal at Wales, West Bank Demerara, were yesterday each released on $300,000 bail after they denied a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Davanand Rambarran, 32, of Lot 21 Vriesland, West Bank Demerara, and Nicolas Osborne appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Wales Magistrate’s Court.
The charge against them stated that on June 21, at Wales, West Bank Demerara, they had in their possession 481 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
They both pleaded not guilty to the joint charge.
Rambarran was represented by attorney Bernard DaSilva.
The police, in a statement, said ranks acting on information received around 13:00 hrs on Tuesday went to Wales Public Road, where they observed Osborne sitting on a bicycle in the vicinity of the Wales Police Station.
The statement said the ranks subsequently saw a car, PAB 228, which was at the time being driven by Rambarran, pull up alongside Osborne. He handed Osborne a black bulky plastic bag and then drove off.
Osborne kept possession of the bulky plastic bag and rode off on his bicycle in the direction of the police ranks. He was pursued by the ranks and apprehended along with the black bulky plastic bag.
The bag was opened in his presence by a police rank and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis, was found.
Police then carried out a search on Osborne and an object which appeared to be a firearm was seen. He was escorted along with the suspected cannabis and the firearm to Wales Police Station.
The ranks then went to the home of Ramcharran, of Vriesland, also on the West Bank of Demerara, where he was told of the offence.
Meanwhile, a charge was also laid yesterday against Seeranie Rameshwar, of Schoonord, also on the West Bank, who police said went to La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station and offered a rank $300,000 in cash to have the proceedings against her brother, Rambarran, withdrawn.
The police had said Rameshwar went into the Criminal Investigation Department at La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station and when she handed over the sum of money to the rank, she was arrested by a female rank.
She was told of the offence – attempting to pervert the course of justice – cautioned and placed into custody. The sum of money was counted in her presence and it amounted to $280,000.
Rameshwar, 38, who is a teacher, also appeared before Magistrate McGusty yesterday.
The teacher, who is attached to the Patentia Primary School, pleaded not guilty to the charge and bail was set in the sum of $200,000.
The matters were ad-journed until July 7, 2022.
