The Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis National Novices Championships returned with a punch filled start last evening to its familiar stomping ground, the National Gymnasium.
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the event recommenced with nine bouts on opening night.
In arguably the most entertaining fight on last evening’s card, Republican Boxing Gym’s Kevin Padmore got the judges nod against featherweight foe, Alan Xavier of the Guyana Defence Force in a crowd pleasing punch fest.
The three-day fixture is scheduled to attract in excess of 50 boxers who will be lacing up the gloves for bragging rights and trophies.
Opening night ushered in the return of the Republican (Prisons) Boxing Gym and the Guyana Police Force Gym.
Other gyms competing are Young Achievers, Vergenoegen, Forgotten Youth Foundation, Guyana Defence Force, Rose Hall Jammers and the Pace and Power Gym.
The Guyana Defence Force are the defending champions.
