Sponsorship is important

For a number of years, the Guyana Chess Federation’s (GCF) most magnanimous sponsors for tournaments were Keishar’s Enterprise and Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL). Perhaps it was because two senior officials of the two entities loved and played the game competitively.

To this day, chess benefits from the sponsorship of DDL. Chess enjoyed the goodness of Banks DIH Limited, Neal and Massy and Trophy Stall, among other businesses large and small.

When a business sponsors chess it becomes associated with a prestigious activity. It may not say much to a sponsor but then again, chess tournaments do not only require cash.

Pinnacle Business Services Inc and Jade’s Wok (a restaurant specialising in Asian cuisine) presented cheques for $100,000 each to the GCF for the Olympiad team. In photo Managing Director of Pinnacle Business Samantha Lucknauth (left) presents a cheque to GCF’s Marcia Lee.

A bookshop may be inclined to donate chess books or some chess sets and simultaneously increase its opportunities.

Or a sponsor may decide to offer a venue for a one-day tournament. I can recall in 2007 when tournament chess returned to Guyana we played our first competition at the YMCA Hall in Thomas Lands. It was either given to the GCF free of cost or rented for a minimal fee. Eight people played in that tournament. The game of chess has grown since then.

To date the GCF benefited from GAICO Construction Inc sponsoring Grands Prix 1 and 2, the National Qualifiers and National Championship. KFC Guyana has sponsored the Women’s Qualifiers and Women’s National Championship. Meanwhile, Plympton Farms, Marics & Company Ltd, Jade’s Wok, ArrowTen Inc, Pinnacle Business Services and Team Mohamed’s are sponsoring the Olympiad team’s travel to India.
