Former West Indies women’s team captain, Merissa Aguilleira is excited about the inaugural women’s Caribbean Premier League this season.
In an exclusive interview with this publication in Guyana during the Women’s Regional Super50, Aguilleira stated, “I am really excited about the [women’s] CPL.
“I think it is a really good initiative. When you look around the world you see the countries are making sure that they implement these kinds of initiatives in order to get women’s cricket forward so knowing that it is here, in the Caribbean I am really excited about it.”
The Trinidadian represented the West Indies women’s team in 112 One-Day Internationals and 95 T20 Internationals during her decade-long career.
Aguilleira told this publication, “I’m looking forward to seeing good performances because we, in the West Indies, need to sell a brand of cricket that everyone is accustomed to, the fun, the excitement, the passionate type of West Indies cricket and I think we really need to make sure that is going forward to make people interest in women’s cricket.”
Recently, former West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor and women’s head coach, Courtney Walsh, were both in approval of the tournament, noting it will do well for the development of women’s cricket in the Region.
The tournament will see three teams, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Trinbago Knight Riders and Barbados Royals, featuring a total of 33 of the best female players from across the Caribbean.
The competition is set to get underway from August 30.
