A police constable and a taxi driver were on Monday charged with having in their possession a quantity of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Kenrick Marks, 23, of Lot 66 ‘B’ Field, Sophia and 26-year-old Kevrol Huton of Vigilance East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where the charge was jointly read to the two defendants.
The allegation against the duo states that on June 22nd, 2022 at Mandela Avenue, they had in their possession 1,045 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. Both men pleaded not guilty and bail was granted in the sum of $390,000 each. They were also ordered to report to the Brickdam Police Station every last Friday of each month, until the conclusion of the matter. The matter was then adjourned until July 12th, 2022 for disclosure.
The two men, who were represented by attorney-at-law, George Thomas, argued that there was multiple occupancy of the vehicle and that they were not allowed to be present during the search. Thomas, while representing Marks, said that on the day in question, his client had taken a taxi and it was stopped by police ranks who then asked that he step out for a search to be conducted. Thomas said that after some time, his client was then informed that a quantity of cannabis had been found under the passenger seat of the said car. The attorney argued that the search was carried out while Marks was some distance away from the vehicle and was not present in order to oversee the actual search. The other defendant, Huton, through Thomas, stated that he is a gold miner who sometimes moonlights as a taxi driver. He said that on the day in question, he was working as a taxi driver and had picked up several passengers. Huton said that as a consequence he could not have been aware of the bag of cannabis.
