Dear Editor,
I recently returned to Guyana. As I exited the airway bridge at Cheddi Jagan Inter-national Airport, like all other incoming passengers, my eyes were greeted by an unflattering portrait of Mr. Irfaan Ali. I had thought that with the return to democracy Guyana had discarded this cult of personality reserved for communist repressive and undemocratic regimes such as exist in North Korea, China and Russia. Indeed what is even more telling, is that I did not see a single portrait of Dr. Cheddi Jagan after whom the airport was named; an omission that should be immediately put right. This display of Mr. Ali’s portrait, is tasteless and lacking in class and should be removed without further delay. I am sure it can be adequately and more tastefully accommodated in the national collection at Castellani House. But this should not be the first thing visitors to Guyana have to see as they arrive in the country.
Sincerely,
(Name and address supplied)
