Police ranks from Regional Division #5 on Saturday discovered over 115 pounds of cannabis at a house on the left bank of the Abary River and a young labourer who claimed to be the caretaker of the property was arrested as a result.
In a press release, the Guyana Police Force said the discovery was made at about 12:00 hrs and it was based on information received.
The police ranks, acting on the information received, went to an area on the left bank of the Abary River, about 40 miles in from the public road, where they found a two-storey wooden and concrete house on a plot of land. The ranks also met a 23-year-old labourer from Tempie Village, West Coast Berbice.
A search was subsequently conducted and four salt bags were found in a room in the lower flat of the house. The bags were checked and were found to have contained 31 wrapped parcels, all containing leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis.
The police claimed that when told of the offence, arrested and cautioned, the labourer said the place belonged to “Jah” and that he is just the caretaker.
The labourer and the suspected cannabis were escorted to the Weldaad Police Station, where the suspected cannabis was weighed. It amounted to 52.617 kilogrammes, which is equivalent to 116 pounds.
The police added that checks are presently being made for the owner of the house where the narcotics was found.
