Slingerz FC maintained their perfect record in the West Demerara Football Association Senior Men’s League, defeating Den Amstel 3-1 to secure their third consecutive victory on Friday evening at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
It was a clash of the unbeaten teams and Slingerz stormed into the early lead following a horrendous goalkeeping error in the fifth minute. A hopeful right-footed free-kick 40 yards from goal on the right side of the field, was inexplicably parried into the net by the onrushing goalkeeper, much to the dismay of the large crowd.
The Tuschen-based team doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute with a moment of individual brilliance from Dexroy Adams. Racing onto a lobbed through pass down the left side of the field, Adams uncorked a powerful first-time volley as the ball bounced after landing on the turf, before sailing into the top left corner.
Den Amstel eventually pulled one back in the 61st minute through Malcolm Miggins. Awarded a penalty kick following a handball infraction, Miggins made no mistake from the distance, as he slotted his effort into the left corner.
Nevertheless, Ricardo Halley sealed the result in the 85th minute via a penalty conversion. Tasked with the responsibility from the distance after Deon Alfred was fouled inside the centre of the area, Halley rifled his effort into the lower-left corner.
Meanwhile, Eagles defeated Crane 2-1 in the opening match. Crane secured the initial lead in the sixth minute, as A. Bowman scored, slotting a first-time effort into the lower right corner from inside the penalty area, after latching onto a flat right-sided cross.
The lead proved to be short-lived, as M. Morris equalised two minutes later, curling a right-footed effort into the centre of the net from the top of the 18-yard area.
R. Livan eventually grabbed the winner in the 68th minute as he converted from the penalty spot under the diving goalkeeper, following a reckless challenge inside the right of the 18-yard box.
