Guyana U19 women beat B/dos by nine wickets

The Cricket West Indies Women’s U19 Rising Stars T20 championships got underway yesterday with Guyana beating Barbados by nine wickets at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex, Trinidad and Tobago.

With scattered showers reducing the match to 15 overs per side, Guyana won the toss and inserted Barbados who managed 62 for three from their quota. Guyana then reached 63 for one with 26 balls to spare.

Barbados were off to a good start with Zaliya Campbell hitting three boundaries during her top score of 17 from 27 balls before being trapped leg before wicket by Realeanna Grimmond.

Campbell shared a 25-run opening stand with Trishan Holder who made three from 17 balls but held out to Grimmond at long on off the bowling of Niveena Ramnauth.

Ramnauth also removed Naijanni Cumberbatch for five to end with 2-3 from three overs. Asabi Callender then ensured Barbados a respectable total with 12 not out, hitting one four and one six along the way while getting support from Theanny Herbert-Mayers with nine not out. Extras complemented Barbados’ total with 16.

In reply, Naomi Barkoye piloted the chase with 25 not out from 36 balls. After losing her opening partner, Grimmond, for one, Barkoye struck four boundaries while sharing an unbroken 44-run partnership with Captain Ashmini Munisar.

Munisar ensured Guyana got over the line with 14 not out from 24 balls, striking two boundaries while extras accounted for 23 towards the target.

Meanwhile, USA defeated Jamaica by seven wickets. USA won the toss and inserted Jamaica who were contained to 49 for five in their full 20 overs. USA then raced to 53 for three in 11.2 overs.

Extras accounted for the most of Jamaica’s tally with 17 while off the bat, G. Bryan was the only batter to reach double figures with 12 not out. 

In the chase, A. Kolan finished with 11 not out while I. Vaghela reached nine not out as USA got over the line.
