Flags to be flown at half-staff in honour of assassinated former Japan PM

President Irfaan Ali has declared that all flags are to be flown at half-staff today to honour former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated while campaigning for a parliamentary election yesterday morning.

The 67-year-old Former Prime Minister was shot outside a train station while making a speech in the city of Nara.

Meanwhile, in a letter to Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, President Ali extended condolences to the government and people of Japan on the killing of Abe.
“Former Prime Minister Abe was held in high esteem by the people of Guyana. During his years in office, relations between Guyana and Japan were taken to a high level particularly through his interest in the implementation of bilateral programmes of cooperation geared to support our climate change agenda”, he said.
